Using multiple playbacks

Post by Umstattd » Wed Jul 03, 2019 11:22 am

I am just starting using the multiple playbacks. My thought is that I was going to use one playback for the movers and one for the conventional lights. That works for some cues but had issues with others. I created the cue lists with all the lights that I was not using turned off. I then set the looks on the stage and recorded cues. I then turned off all the conventional lights and recorded mover cues. I assigned the two cue lists to playbacks. When playing cues, some cues in each playback worked without affecting anything else while others would affect fixtures in the other playback. Is the answer to record "Selected" instead of "Live"? It is possible that some of my problems happened when I wold "Update" a cue and would have other lights on.

Another issue was that sometimes the cues would not produce the colors or positions that were recorded. I was randomly selecting cues to get the "look" I wanted for a particular song in the concert. I think this was happening because I recorded the cues in "Tracking" mode and playing cues randomly. I should have recorded in "Non Tracking" mode so all levels and values of all the fixtures would record in the cues, correct?

Third issue was that sometimes when updating a cue with "selected" option, the system crashed.

Hope this makes sense.

While I don't regularly use multiple cue lists the way you are describing, here is what I would expect. When using a single cue list, my record default should be Live. When using multiple cue lists, my record default should either be "changed" or "selected".

I would use Tracking or Cue Only based upon my preferences outside of the consideration of single/multiple cue lists. if you are a tracking person, use tracking.

Update should only concern itself with changed values.

I also look at the color of the data in the Classic Grid and the ML View to determine if there is data there that shouldn't be. Try and figure out where it came from and adjust your programming techniques accordingly. Remember that blue data in the ML view is instructions and get rid of it if you don't need it.

Sometimes when dealing with multiple cue lists, I'll use the Cue List display and look at what is in the "Channels" column. If there are channels in there that I don't want, you can just edit the list and remove them.

While I'm not sure what is going on with the crash you can send in the bug report and we can take a look. Email to me at and I'll get it to the developer.

What software version are you on? You can also send the showfile and information to duplicate the issue for us to evaluate.
