250ML Frustration

Post by pjahaslam » Sat Jul 26, 2014 10:39 am

So I I've got my nice new ML250 in hire stock and it's off to be used on it first show. Which is just in a small theatre using generic lanterns and colour scrollers. Me thinks that's nothing to taxing, oh how wrong I was. The customer ended up using the house Zero 88 desk.

So my back ground is professional theatre and have used a lot of Strand control desks over the years, Duet/Lightboard M/M24/Gemini/Gaxley/Mx/200/400 & 500 series. I was heavily involved with field trials of the 400/500 series desks for a number of years. In fact I still have a 530i which will still give any the current Strand desks a good hammering in the field.

The 250ML seems to be missing some of the basics, like cmd line channel 1 @ + 1 or - 1 enter to take a channel or group of channels up or down a point from it current level. There is no copy from command for channel or cue. If you have a fixture patched you can not call the intensity channel to a level from the command line eg. 901 @ 6 enter. Then when you patch a colour scroller fixture in it will only allow the dmx address to be 2 consecutive numbers eg intensity dmx address 300 and colour dmx address 301, this just does not work in the real world as the intensity dmx address is often a house dmx address of say 25 and the scroller(colour) dmx address would be say 306. I can't link cues for those times when you link a group of cues out. There's no rem dim or flash button!

I think that will do for now, I'm sure there will be many others things I find. In all I can't believe Philips Strand could ever believe that this desk will take on the likes of Zero 88 or ETC with there smaller desks as it's quiet clear the software still needs a lot of work. Come on Philips Strand restore my faith in you, since the 200/500 series desks where scrapped you have lost the market to ETC mainly with Zero 88 picking up the smaller desk end there was a time here in the UK where a Strand 500 series desk was in most of the Theatres and on most of the Tours.

At present I think the 250ML will end up on the shelve as I have other desks that will do a better job, please let's get the software into some shape soon or I will have to sell it on.

I'm afraid this harks back to a post of mine some time back. One of the factors in my buying this was the statement from Philips Strand that they were determined to turn round their recent poor performance and enthusiastically support and develop this product. Around the beginning of the year I pointed out that there had been no software updates since September, despite a number of bugs and requests for features appearing on here: at that time you reassured us that this was only a temporary lack of attention and things would get back on track imminently. It's now August, the desk still has several shortfalls and bugs which haven't been addressed, and the last update was at the beginning of May.

If you've given up on it, and are putting all your efforts into Neo, at least be honest enough to tell us so we can just cut our losses and move on. I'm utterly dismayed by the way this product has (not) been supported.

I fully agree with your remarks pjahaslam.
We sold 3 consoles has three different clients
and my three clients, we had ask to change it to another console
after the many problems with the Lightpalette software, you had to make a perfect software with these new little consoles,
but no! it's worse than Zero 88 or similar console
I hope, you will seriously reconsider the software, and rapidly
if not, your console will have the same reputation as the Lightpalette, despite that software Lightpalette run fine now, but too late.

Is there any news on a date for the next software release? I'm reluctant to give up completely, because it has potential - if it gets the bugs sorted and a few improvements added - to be a really useful and attractive desk, filling a niche that no-one else quite does. But it's not nearly in good enough shape for that yet, and I reiterate, if you have given up on it I'd really rather know now, rather than just waiting for ever for any bugfixes or improvements.

Thanks for your support and no we have not stopped support. There are limitations but we have been doing some work on the software. We have been testing some beta code but it's not ready for customer trials. I hope to have something soon.
