Other software on the console

Of course it is necessary to keep the console as clean as possible in terms of other cpu-consuming software, but I'd like to see some software added. Having this on-board could even be an extra selling point.

- Conversion tools from Compulite to be able to convert Compulite showfiles to USITT files (which the desk can read)
http://www.compulite.com/index.php?page_id=14#Utilities
- Conversion tools from ETC
they appeared to have disappeared from their website though...

I have people asked how safe the desk is in terms of viruses etc. if you connect it directly to the internet. Would it be possible to install a (free) viruschecker like AVG http://www.grisoft.com/? I think the built-in firewall of the embedded xp is switched on by default.

Thing is - we don't have the rights to ship that s/w so we can't install it.

As far as the firewall is concerned - it is definately TURNED ON. The XPE build we ship is SP2 (obviously - as SP1 didn't have the firewall) and things are pretty tight as far as protections are concerned.

FYI - I just learned something today. In my early builds of XPE, the Welcome screan had the XP Embedded logo. The current image does not. I just found out that that was part of SP2, for whatever reason. I'm pretty sure I saw some of our compititions' consoles boot with the XPE logo (which means they are probably still using SP1). :geek:

Is it possible to suppress the welcome screen, or put in a custom logo?

I hate advertising for Microsoft!

There are a suite of choices for this discussed here:

I like the "BootSkin" option - and create a Strand bootup splash screen.

It must be possible to change this splash screen.
http://www.themexp.org/listings.php?typ ... %20Screens is a site full of those things. I'm not sure Microsoft likes even the embedded software to be 'unbranded'. There must be something in Strands licence...

Gary correctly stated it, whereas John and Gooze mention other ideas, but not the one we're after.

There IS lots of talk about changing the boot screen, as mentioned, but the simplest thing to do is disable as we have always done using the /noguiboot option. What Gary mentioned is the WELCOME screen which is part of WINLOGIN (which we use) vs. MINLOGIN which would not have a WELCOME screen (and is not useful to us for a plethora of other reasons).

There is talk elsewhere on the net of changing the text of the WELCOME screen to something else, but my attempts have failed. Per-chance our competitors have opted to use MINLOGIN to avoid any branding and managed their user accounts in other ways. We chose not to.

Are people really connecting Palette consoles to networks with Internet access? Our practice is to strongly recommend the lighting network be completely closed. With the open ports for http, telnet, ftp... for not just the console but the racks and nodes the idea of opening the network to non-lighting devices is pretty frightening.

Taine, your speech is the one I give to Marquee and Horizon users.

Internet access on a temporary basis for updates and support is fine,
but don't leave the system exposed full-time.

(I am hoping once things get rolling,
Strand will adopt the service we provide to Marquee cusotmers known as "SOS" (Save our show).
It allows us to remotely access a customers machine through secure VPN.)

Unfortunately, absolutely. Especially if they are using DMX out of the console, what's the harm in plugging it into the campus-wide network? That's the mentality of lots of folks today.

I just tried yet another registry tweak. My system now no longer has the text Loading User Prolife or Shutting Down, but the Windows logo is still there.

I think I prefer to know what the system is doing rather than just looking at a blue screen with the logo - so I'm not going to make that change in new systems.
