With the release of 10.4.1 we will add an Open Source section to the forum. This will be a place users can share code that interfaces with Palette either via Telnet, RS232 or clever macros writen with Lua Scripts within the console itself. Source code can be anything but will likely be one of VB6, VB.Net, Lua Scripts or Java Scripts. When the new version is released, I will post a number of applications that users can d/l and run, or take the source code and modify it and share with the rest of us. Items we post will be protected under GNU licenese.

Watch this space.

Watching, waiting, thinking...

There is plenty of stuff I would put into the open source section without any real thought. Free to use for others. HOWEVER, I think there might be a few tools that I could spend time and money to develop really well. Will I be able to "sell" this plugin under the licensing terms?

I already have a number of really cool tools to build.

John,

Here is a link to the GNU license. I believe that you could ask for money but not charge for it under this arrangement. This is basically a Freeware license.

The code we publish on the site will be GNU licensed. If you take and modify our code to extend the functionality, you will not be able to sell it; and in fact, we'd encourage you to re-post it for the community to take advantage of. If you build something from scratch yourself - you probably wouldn't want to Open Source it or publish it on our site IF you intend to sell it. Although, we would allow a link to your site on this forum.

Having Open Source software doesn't mean you can't make money from it, it depends on the terms of the license. For general reading on Open Source software licenses, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source_license and for dual licensing see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_license.

Any software Horizon Control publishes in the strand-dev.com Open Source forum will be GNU Version 2 licensed. We want people to take it, use it and give back. You are free to sell it, you just need to tell whoever is buying it that the source is available for free. Maybe your "added value" is selling binaries with an installer -- great, I hope you make lots of money.
