I believe Bill gets the credit for doing this first, but I want to share my recent experience demoing the Abstract Control Module using Vari*Lites and conventional cyc units.

In two different theatres over the past two days, I've plugged my desk into the house dimmer system where they happened to have Red, Green and Blue units handily focused on massive cycs. (R124, R125 and R126). I focused the VL1K at the bottom of the cyc and did a shutter cut to meet the top cyc units half way up. With all the conventional unit patched as RGB intelligent lights, I could grab the mass along with the VL and use CMY, RGB or HSL colour space and choose any colour at will and they matched!

Jaws dropped; including mine.

I've heard about Bill's demos with 3 parcans and Alan's very positive reaction to it, but I'm telling you, the impact in real life is startling. Using the colour picker on conventional additive cyc units and having it match a subtractive CMY fixture using any colour space under the sun is VERY impressive. Then, picking a colour and putting the whole rig into HSL and using one encoder magically control 18+ dimmer to go through the rainbow effortlessly is way beyond WOW. You can then FAN the Hue and get real rainbows from SL to SR.

The impact the ACM generally has is very positive. I tell you that this demo takes it up a few notches. I've done it before with Vari*Lites and Color Kinetics gear, but taking 30 year old cyc units and 40 year old EC dimmers with ratty old gel and turning it all into intelligent fixtures takes it to a whole new level that catches you way off guard. EVEN if you've been playing with the ACM for 3 years like I have.

When you go into a venue to demo a desk - make sure you look up to see if they offer you the gift I was offered this week by two venues. The dimmers must be consecutive (as they normally are on cyc rails). Then just make them GENERIC RGB 24-bit fixtures and patch each Red dimmer in the attribute column (and nothing in the Intensity column). The Green and Blue will occupy the next two consecutive dimmers. You might have to swap gels (easier than futzing with the Patch By Output and screwing up the middle of the fixture).

Nice thing is you have Intensity over the lot using the fixture's intensity channel (Fixture grid intensity vs. Color A, B or C values).

I am sure Bill will reveal after a few drinks that the idea really came from me when he came to do some demos here last year.

I spent a bit of time getting some Lee Filter colours that replicated the LED output of a Color Kinetics fixture, with the end result being L090 for green, L363 for Blue and L106 for Red. The full white is quite muddy, but the mix looks pretty good using standard cyc lights.

I have been looking for a while to do this with my color strip lights over the stage and cyc. Can you please explain how to do this? My lights consist of 4 sets of 4 lights (white, blue, green, red) per strip. I can easily move gels if necessary. Each gel is a glass 50 degree roundel. Any help will be appreciated.

I'll outline a simple setup.

Fixtures 1 through 10 want to be your cyc units. Output assignments for RGB on your first cell is 101, for your second cell is 105, for your third cell is 109 and so on. (This will ignore your fourth cell as it only deals with RGB)
Change the type to RGB in the Type column. Remember, you are treating this as an intelligent fixture.
Then, with your RGB cells in numerical output order, change the value for Att1 to 101. This will assign 101 as R, 102 as G and 103 as B.
Reverse and repeat for Fixture 2's attr address at 105, fixture 3 at 109 and so on.

Then just program it as if it were an intelligent fixture. Set intensity and then select your color.

Generic RGB+W 4 Channel
is your best bet, same patch technique as described by Bobby.

This sounds neat! I can patch my RGB strip lights as an intelligent fixture and then use the color picker to choose color? Please clarify how to do. Right now each color is on one of three 6KW dimmers 25-27 and patched to channels 51-53. Do I patch as just one fixture, using just one channel to #25? Please walk me thru this. Thanks!

That is correct, it would be one RGB+W fixture.
Take a look at Bobby's earlier post, he describes the way to patch it.

Ok, I got it to work, but for most colors, even with intensity at full, the overall intensity is much lower than if I mix the three colors individually. Any way around this..??

The RGB+W fixture is designed for LEDs and accomodates for color temprature.
Go to the 2nd color encoder page and set the color mode to "direct".
This will disable the auto color temp adjustment.

It worked! Thanks for all your help. I will also try the rgb+w setting. I had to do some minor reconfiguring of gels, but it still works well. I'm having a great time teaching my students about these new effects. Thanks again.
