Universal Palettes

It would be nice if when I recorded a color or gobo palette for one light of a particular kind, that palette could apply to all lights of that kind. Heck with some parameters it might be nice to have the palette apply to all lights since universal attributes should enable this to happen. It seems crazy that I have to update Palettes if I patch more lights or forgot to include one in the selection when I initially recorded the palette.

Not really any reason to record Palettes anymore for things other than Position.
And in that respect, applying position to multiple fixtures is rather pointless.
But I agree with your point.

There are huge reasons to record palettes. You can run a show live by using the A/B or C/D Faders as live time selectors than using the century panel to execute things live. Rolling through gobos or colors on wheels doesn't work so well live. I would, however, agree with not needing positions to be universal.

I can see that.
Personally I am not a fan of building looks in the programmer due to lack of LTP,
and an oops release can black out town :)

Back in the day when I used to run lights for dance clubs, DJ's, bands etc. on the MA,
I always usde a crapload of cue lists, then build alacarte from there.

i agree with Geoff, i think the palettes should be universal. I would even go as far as to say we shouldn't exclude Position. what about having a single fixture that you like the tilt on, select a bunch more apply the palette and then a fan. i think it's a much slicker way to do it, than going through the whole process like we do now.

The discussion between Selective and Universal palette has been a long one on these forums. There are good uses for both. The Palette obviously supports a form of Universal Palettes in the Gel "libraries". I am not aware of a means for the user to extend these. And that would be a very cool capability to have.

That said, there is also great power in the current "Selective" palettes - Only fixtures recording in the palette are affected when they are applied AND the values for each fixture in the palette can be different.

agree, Taine, i think you bring up two very good points. The Universal Palette Model is something i think needs to be extended to all of the Palettes, i don't think anyone would argue with that. But i also think your suggestion of keeping the selective Palettes is a good idea, an excellent way of making sure you don't record something to a fixture if you don't want to.

Remember that the gel libraries are specialized Look pages.

So what you are suggesting is that Looks be changed to allow attribute selection and then have them apply to any fixture in the rig.

Does this exist in any form yet? Universal palettes are exactly what I'm in need of for our Selador rig, and without them we're staring at a lot of extra legwork for each show.

Look into 'Copy Data' in patch. This could copy all data (including positions and colours) to new fixtures from an existing show
