Artnet, Shownet and DMX at the same time

Post by JohnGrimshaw » Wed Jul 30, 2008 5:35 pm

Can the gurus here see any problems that I might have with a system that uses:
- Artnet to talk to the in house dimmers
- Shownet to talk to nodes that I want to put into the venue
- DMX direct out of the desk if required

Ta

I can't call myself a guru...
But we currently run Pathport, Shownet, and Straight DMX off our Light Palette VL...

We run true DMX via Universes 1,2, and 4 to Dimmers, Moving Lights, and a Media Server (In that order)
Pathport via Universe 3 to our pathport node backstage. (Mainly LED and Wireless DMX)
Shownet bound to Universes 1 thru 3 for WYSIWYG.

Haven't had a single issue with it.

There's two switches (well, one is a router, but that's because our internet comes off our coporate network, and I wanted the integrated firewall to actively block unauthorized access to our lighting network) in the ethernet line. And internet is brought in to the console via the router.

Have also considered putting Artnet into the equation to control out Maxedia Media Server with it instead of DMX... (Our Maxedia DMX box had a disagreement with a chair at some point, and the DMX Out no longer functions, making it a one way street...)

Have spoken with Robert on a few occasions about this, and he maintains that it should be possible to run them all at the same time with no performance hit.
